Geelani urges UN to implement its resolutions on Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 3: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani Monday urged UN General Secretary Ban-Ki-Moon to call an immediate session of Security Council and pass an additional resolution to press India to hold referendum in disputed Jammu and Kashmir under sections 6 and 7 of the UN charter.

In a letter to the UN general secretary, Geelani reminded the international body of its "moral and legal commitment" to guarantee right to self determination to the people of Kashmir by the amalgam.

"In view of the resolutions passed by it the UN is morally and legally responsible for making sure that Kashmiris get their right to self determination and impress upon India and Pakistan to cooperate in implementation of these resolutions," Geelani said in a statement.

He said Kashmir was a threat to international peace and the dream of a stable and peaceful South Asia cannot be realized until the 63-year-old dispute was resolved.

"Already India and Pakistan have fought three wars over Kashmir, and role of the UN general secretary towards resolving the Kashmir dispute becomes more imperative in view of the nuclear-capability of both the countries. India should not be allowed to put world peace at risk," he said.

Geelani asked Moon to take cognizance of India's reluctance to allow Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, International Red Cross and other international rights bodies to visit Kashmir while dismissing their reports regarding human rights violations committed by forces in Kashmir.
"Having already killed lakhs of people, disappeared more than ten thousand people, force personnel continue to use brute force against peaceful demonstrations," he said.

Meanwhile, a spokesman said, Geelani would preside over a seminar " UN resolutions and Sacrifices of Oppressed People" at the amalgam's Hyderpora office on January 5 to remind the UN of its resolutions passed in favour of Kashmiris' right to self determination on the day in 1949 .

Geelani would also address a seminar in Jamia Masjid Sopore on January 6 in memory of 45 innocents who were killed by the Border Security Force personnel on that day in 1993, the spokesman said, adding that a complete shutdown would be observed in Sopore on January 6.
