US sets up center for 'secret war' 06 Jan 2011 The US administration is ramping up a "secret war on terror groups" in hot spots around the globe by establishing a new military targeting center, officials say. According to incumbent and former US officials, the center, run by the US Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), keeps an eye on the growing use of special operation strikes against individuals. "The center is staffed with at least 100 counter terror experts fusing the military's special operations elite with analysts, intelligence and law enforcement officials from the FBI, Homeland Security and other agencies," the officials revealed to the Associated Press.

U.S. tells agencies: Watch 'insiders' to prevent new WikiLeaks --Memo also suggests agencies take new steps to identify any contacts between federal workers and members of the news media 05 Jan 2011 The Obama administration is telling federal agencies to take aggressive new steps to prevent more WikiLeaks embarrassments, including instituting "insider threat" programs to ferret out disgruntled employees who might be inclined to leak classified documents, NBC News has learned. As part of these programs, agency officials are being asked to figure out ways to "detect behavioral changes" among employees who might have access to classified documents. A highly detailed 11-page memo prepared by U.S. intelligence officials and distributed by Jacob J. Lew, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, suggests that agencies use psychiatrists and sociologists to measure the "relative happiness" of workers or their "despondence and grumpiness" as a way to assess their trustworthiness.

Scientists said that New Year's Eve fireworks might have been to blame for the 3,000 blackbirds that died in a small town in Arkansas. But they were forced to order more tests last night after 500 birds plummeted to the ground 360 miles away in Louisiana on Monday and dozens more died in Kentucky. And just a 100 miles away from the Arkansas mass bird kill, at least 83,000 dead and dying fish washed ashore - possibly as many as 100,000. The Internet has been abuzz with conspiracy theories about secret government testing and a looming Armageddon.
