CIA advisor: Extraordinary rendition legal 05 Nov 2010 A top lawyer for the CIA has claimed that the practice of extraordinary rendition is legal, even in cases that lead to the torture of a suspect. Daniel Pines, an assistant general counsel at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), has claimed that the practice of abducting terror suspects overseas and sending them to a third country for interrogation is legal under US law. Writing in the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal, Pines stated, "There are virtually no legal restrictions on these types of operations… Indeed, US law does not even preclude [the] rendering [of] individuals to a third country in instances where the third country may subject the rendered individual to torture."

Bush admits sanctioning torture 04 Nov 2010 Former US president [sic] George Bush has admitted that he personally approved a request by CIA agents to use waterboarding -- a form of torture that simulates drowning. In his book "Decision Points," to hit the shelves on Tuesday, Bush makes it clear that he approved the use of waterboarding in interrogation of so-called "terror suspects." He recalls in the memoir that when the CIA asked him whether it could proceed with waterboarding of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the alleged plotter of the 9/11 attacks, he replied "Damn right," The Washington Post reported... Former Vice President [sic] Dick Cheney has also acknowledged supporting torture. "I was a big supporter of waterboarding," he said in a television interview in February. [Get Bush and Cheney to the Hague so they can be tried, convicted and imprisoned/executed for war crimes (Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, CIA black sites) and treason (9/11, the anthrax murders).]

In new memoir, Bush makes clear he approved use of waterboarding 04 Nov 2010 Human rights experts have long pressed the administration of former president [sic] George W. Bush for details of who bore ultimate responsibility for approving the simulated drownings of CIA detainees prisoners, a practice that many international legal experts say was illicit torture. In a memoir due out Tuesday, Bush makes clear that he personally approved the use of that coercive technique against alleged Sept. 11 plotter Khalid Sheik Mohammed, an admission the human rights experts say could one day have legal consequences for him.

'US targets civilians in Kandahar' --US-led NATO forces have used aerial bombings, hidden booby traps and mines in private homes. 05 Nov 2010 US-led foreign forces have once again been criticized for military operations that have led to death and destruction in war-ravaged Afghanistan. A human rights group says civilian casualties have spiked since operations started in Kandahar province in early September. The Afghan Rights Monitor (ARM) says the US-led campaign in Kandahar has destroyed or damaged hundreds of houses.

Another day, another unreported budget-busting bl*wjob for US corporaterrorists: US to spend 500 million dollars on embassy in Afghanistan --Embassy expansion contract worth 511 million dollars awarded to US company, Caddell Construction Inc. 03 Nov 2010 The United States is bolstering its presence in Afghanistan with a 500 million dollar expansion of its Kabul embassy and the construction of two consulates, it announced Wednesday. Washington's Kabul embassy is already its biggest in the world, with about 1,100 employees, projected to rise to 1,200 by the end of the year, officials said. Congressman Buck McKeon, who will now take over the House Armed Services Committee from the Democrats, has also announced his party's plan for Afghanistan and Iraq. He said that under the Republicans the committee's top priority would be to continue the US military presence in Afghanistan.

The ministry said the captured terrorists have conceded to assassinating five Iranians for which they were supposed to receive $20,000 for each terrorist act but they were only paid $8000 in all. Several weapons and documents have also been discovered from the terrorists, the ministry said, adding that a British-based terrorist named Jalil Fatahi has been leading the terror group from Soleimaniyeh in Iraq.

Homeland Security advises Jewish institutions 04 Nov 2010 The U.S. Department of Homeland Security advised Jewish institutions on protecting themselves from terrorist threats. About 500 Jewish agencies joined a 75-minute conference call on Wednesday focusing on security. The call was organized after the [alleged] thwarted mail-bomb threat against two Jewish institutions in Chicago.

Officials deny Yemen bomb defused 17 minutes before it was set to go off 04 Nov 2010 A claim by the French interior minister that one of two mail bombs sent from Yemen last week was defused 17 minutes before it had been set to explode was today disputed by officials familiar with the investigation. Brice Hortefeux provided no other details in an interview on France's state-run France-2 television, and did not say where he had got the information about the timing. Officials investigating the bomb found at East Midlands airport poured cold water on his remarks. One said: "There is nothing to support that."

Al-Qaeda terrorists linked to plane bomb plot operating in Britain, says Home Secretary 03 Nov 2010 The al-Qaeda [al-CIAduh] terrorist group behind the failed plane parcel bomb attacks is already operating in Britain, the Home Secretary Theresa May has disclosed. The Home Secretary said an "associate" of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) was arrested earlier this year and was allegedly planning a terrorist attack in Britain.

Airport evacuated but suspicious package turns out to be false alarm 04 Nov 2010 Part of Glasgow airport was evacuated last night after a suspicious package, which eventually turned out to be a false alarm, was found in the search area of one of the terminals. Bomb disposal experts from the Royal Navy were called to Scotland's second busiest airport after security staff found a suspect package during a routine X-ray screening of passengers' luggage in the security area where passengers are searched before reaching the restricted zone.

Greek authorities charge two mail bomb suspects with multiple terrorism-related offenses 04 Nov 2010 Two suspected members of a Greek militant group, who were arrested earlier this week in connection with incidents involving mail bombs, have been charged with membership of a terrorist group and multiple terrorism-related offenses. The two suspects, aged 22 and 24, were both formally remanded in pre-trial prison custody Thursday.

Group slams airport naked body scanners --EPICally invasive and ineffective 03 Nov 2010 An electronic privacy group has urged a federal appeals court to limit the use of full body scanners at US airports, arguing the machines are an unprecedented intrusion into the affairs of millions of Americans. In a 55-page brief filed on Monday, the Electronic Privacy Information Center accused the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration of unilaterally mandating the use of the machines as the primary screening technique. By allowing government contractors to capture images of travelers' naked bodies, the policy violates a raft of federal laws, as well as Constitutional protections prohibiting unreasonable search and seizure, it argued.

Opt Out of a Body Scan? Then Brace Yourself 02 Nov 2010 ...I was unhappy last week when some security screeners at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago started yelling. "Opt out! We got an opt out!" one bellowed about me in a tone that people in my desert neighborhood in Tucson usually reserve for declaring, "Rattlesnake!" Other screeners took up the "Opt out!" shout. I was marched from the metal detector lane to one of those nearby whole-body imagers, ordered to take everything out of my pockets, remove my belt and hold my possessions up high. Then I was required to stand still while I received a rough pat-down by a man whose résumé, I suspected, included experience at a state prison.

Scariest speed camera of all... It checks your insurance, tax and even whether you are tailgating or not wearing a seatbelt 03 Nov 2010 Even the most law-abiding driver might feel a shiver down the spine when spotting this speed camera at the roadside. For as well as detecting speeding, it is packed with gizmos that check number plates to make sure insurance and tax are up to date... The latest weapon in speed camera technology can capture footage from 150ft away. It is the first to detect multiple offences at the same time and is connected to police computers via satellite, so that prosecutions can be started within seconds of any offence.

Primary Obusha in 2012 By Lori Price 05 Nov 2010 Dear God, I am already *sick and tired* of the word 'shellacking!' President Obama brought about his own 'shellacking' by acting at the behest of his corporaterrorist paymasters and GOP overlords -- and by betraying and burning his base. US out of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, the Horn of Africa; our email accounts, chatrooms and Skype sessions! End the USA 'PATRIOT' Act and stop the false flags! [Join us on Facebook! Primary Obusha in 2012.]

Obama Concedes 'Shellacking' 04 Nov 2010 President Barack Obama, facing the public after a historic defeat, took responsibility for the "shellacking" Democrats endured on Election Day and promised to negotiate with resurgent Republicans on issues including tax-cut extensions, energy and education. "In the rush of activity, sometimes we lose track of the ways that we connected with folks that got us here in the first place," Mr. Obama said Wednesday during an hour-long press conference. He added that he was "not recommending to every future president that they take a shellacking like I did last night."

Is Obama's War With U.S. Chamber of Commerce Over? 04 Nov 2010 If President Obama is to be believed, one of the bitterest political feuds of the past two years could be cooling off: his [pseudo-] war with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. ...In his post-"shellacking" news conference Wednesday, Mr. Obama came close to conceding the Chamber's main argument, that American businesses have concluded -- wrongly, in Mr. Obama's view -- that his policies are antibusiness. [Obama has *never* been 'at war' with businesses. Every policy that he has advanced reflects complete conciliation to his corporaterrorist overlords, despite one thousand assertions to the contrary.]

McConnell: Defeat Obama With Repeated Attacks On Health Care By Brian Beutler 04 Nov 2010 For the next two years, while Senate Minority Leader [nutjob] Mitch McConnell tries to make Barack Obama a one-term president, he and his counterparts in the House will force repeated votes on repealing and starving the White House's signature accomplishments. At a Heritage Foundation speech later this morning, McConnell will reiterate his desire to see Obama unseated in 2012, and will pull back the veil on the next two years, which are poised to be mired in political theatrics and policy gridlock. "Over the past week, some have said it was indelicate of me to suggest that our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny President Obama a second term in office," McConnell will say. [Obama, too, shares that goal -- that's why he keeps surrendering and burning his base!]

GOP likely to urge Obama officials not to shred documents 03 Nov 2010 Republicans are likely to urge the Obama administration not to shred documents as they transition to the House majority. Before the election, GOP officials on Capitol Hill privately discussed the issue but refrained from publicly tackling it, not wanting to assume what would happen on Election Day. Now that Republicans will control the House, the shredding matter will move front and center. [But... unelected unsub George W. Bush *skates?*]

The GOP Plan to Investigate Obama: The First Four Potential Investigations By Ryan J. Reilly and Johanna Barr 03 Nov 2010 Reps. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Lamar Smith (R-TX) have been attacking the Obama administration since pretty much the day Barack Obama took office. Until now, as just the ranking members of two powerful House committees and members of the minority party, their criticisms of administration officials and their decisions have been mostly limited to issuing press releases. Now -- as the expected chairmen of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Judiciary Committee, respectively -- they're the proud new holders of subpoena power, will have a much more robust unit of investigators and will likely be a huge thorn in the side of President Obama and his top cabinet members.

US Elections 2010: Patty Murray wins Washington state 04 Nov 2010 Democratic Senator Patty Murray has won the close race for the US Senate seat in Washington state. With final votes still being counted, Republican challenger Dino Rossi said he had called Ms Murray to "offer my congratulations". The result leaves the Democrats with 51 seats in the 100-member Senate following Tuesday's mid-term polls.

Bag of Uncounted Ballots Found in Bridgeport --The GOP asked police to take custody of the bag of ballots. 04 Nov 2010 In what has become one of the stranger twists in an already bizarre Governor's race, a bag of uncounted ballots was found in Bridgeport Thursday night. Republican officials were approached by Democratic operatives and told about the surprise ballot bag, according to Bridgeport GOP Chairman Marc Delmonico.

Ruling Offers Polar Bears New Chance at Full Protection 04 Nov 2010 A federal judge today ordered the Department of the Interior to reconsider its 2008 decision not to provide polar bears the most complete protection possible under the Endangered Species Act. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity, Natural Resources Defense Council and Greenpeace seeking additional protection for the polar bear, which is under severe threat from global warming. [Hopefully, Obusha won't burn us on this one, but I'm thinking there's as much chance for that as a cat with a long tail in a room filled with rockers.]

Bush defends Iraq war, torture in book 03 Nov 2010 Former US President [sic] George W. Bush has defended his decisions during his eight years in office, including the war he waged on Iraq that has so far killed over a million Iraqis. In a memoir titled "Decision Points," due to be released next week, Bush claims the invasion of Iraq was justified. He argues that Iraqi citizens are better off without the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, whom he calls a "homicidal dictator." [In psychology, we call that 'projection.'] He also defends his decision to allow torture, asserting that it helped save lives.

Obama Makes Concession Calls 03 Nov 2010 President Barack Obama makes an election night phone call to Rep. John Boehner (R., Ohio) from his Treaty Room office in the White House residence, Tuesday. The White House said that Mr. Obama also talked by phone to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

G.O.P. Captures House, but Not Senate 03 Nov 2010 Republicans captured control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday and expanded their voice in the Senate, riding a wave of voter discontent as they dealt a setback to President Obama just two years after his triumphal victory. A Republican resurgence, propelled by deep economic worries and a forceful opposition to the Democratic agenda of health care and government spending, delivered defeats to House Democrats from the Northeast to the South and across the Midwest.
