Kashmir institute of strategic studies launched

Srinagar, Jan 7:  Kashmir Institute of Strategic Studies was launched on Friday amid the presence of a number of eminent personalities, journalists and academicians.

The Institute Project Director, Khalid Jahangir, told the gathering that the Institute would provide "strategic insights and policy solutions to decision makers in government, international institutions, private sector, and civil society. It will conduct research and analysis and develop policy initiatives that look into the future and anticipate change in the state of Jammu Kashmir."

According to Jahangir the Institute was supported by a Netherlands based NGO. "I am looking forward for meaningful participation of people from different walks of life."

Experts from different fields presented their view point about Kashmir and the present situation.

Dr. Javaid Iqbal, said "violence and gun had played its part in Kashmir and now was the time for holding peaceful process vis-à-vis resolution of Kashmir issue."

Former bureaucrat, Muhammad Shafi Pandit said unless there is a solution to the Kashmir problem, socio-economic problems would not be addressed.

"Despite being part of India for the past 60 years, people continue to suffer in Kashmir. We need to understand why it is happening?" Pandit said.

The director of Kashmir Institute of Strategic studies (Kiss) Khalid Jehangir in his vote of thanks said that the institution is thankful to Kashmir Diaspora Alliance who have contributed information regarding economic conditions of Kashmir through their broachers.

Senior journalist, Riyaz Masroor and Jagmohan Raina also spoke on the occasion.

Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Saleem Nanajee, Showkat Ahmad coordinator Kiss, Dr G N Var (Educationist), Abdul Majeed, father of Late Ishfaq Majid Wani, journalist Ahmed Ali Fayaz and scores of other people were present.

For instance, more than 192,685 killings, 215,877 arrests, 110,000 disappearances, 115,665 home demolitions by Indian Security Forces, leaving 122,675 widows and 207,218 orphans. Indian forces have been committing crimes such as rapes, torture, atrocities and gross human rights violations of the Kashmiri people. Since June11, 2010, more than 120 innocent civilians have been mercilessly martyred because they were demanding freedom from Indian occupation which is the birth right of every human being. All political leaders are confined in jails and some are under house arrest. They are even not permitted to perform their religious duties.  One can imagine the life of a Kashmiri while armed personnel is standing with a gun at every doorstep. Still India wants to know our verdict?  We would like to let the world know that we are determined to no longer live under the occupation of the Indian government as we are not a part of India and never have been, adds Habib Yousafzai.
