Internet 'kill switch' bill to return, prohibiting review by any court 24 Jan 2011 A controversial bill handing President Obama power over privately owned computer systems during a "national cyber emergency," [aka false flag] and prohibiting any review by the court system, will return this year. The revised version [first introduced last summer by Sens. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and Susan Collins (R-ME)] includes new language saying that the federal government's designation of vital Internet or other computer systems "shall not be subject to judicial review." Another addition expanded the definition of critical infrastructure to include "provider of information technology," and a third authorized the submission of "classified" reports on security vulnerabilities.

9/11: 'Awkward gaps and contradictions in official explanations' - You betcha! By Lori Price, www.legitgov.org 26 Jan 2011 I'd like to know *once and for all* how Osama bin Laden was able to command NORAD to 'stand down' the morning of the 9/11 attacks? I'd also like to know how bin Laden was able to 'pull' Lucky Larry's Building 7 (which, incidentally, was announced as having collapsed on the BBC before it even (exploded then) fell -- truth be damned). Bin Laden gave the order to shoot down a US commercial aircraft over Shanksville, PA? And, the lone terrorist rushed to squander, apparently in conjunction with the FBI -- like a squirrel in the dead of winter -- the surveillance footage of the 'plane' that hit the Pentagon? Osama bin Laden was responsible for 'huge surges in purchases of put options on stocks of the two airlines used in the attack -- United Airlines and American Airlines?'

Bush Cabinet Secretaries Illegally Campaigned at Taxpayer Expense, Report Finds --Independent Investigation Says Bush Appointees Violated Hatch Act in 2006 Elections 25 Jan 2011 Several high-ranking officials in the George W. Bush administration illegally used taxpayer-funded resources to campaign for Republican candidates during the 2006 midterm elections, an independent government watchdog concludes. The Office of Special Counsel outlined the findings of its three-year probe in a report released Monday night. The agency condemned overt electioneering by Bush appointees during the workday and the use of taxpayer funds to cover travel expenses for at least seven cabinet secretaries who were sent out on the campaign trail. [No worries. Barack Obama gave his mentor, George W. Bush, a pass on his 3,000 homicides on 9/11, war crimes, and waterboarding. Ergo, there's about as much chance of the 'Justice' Department investigating key officials in the Bush regime as a cat with a long tail in a room filled with rockers. As with MSNBC, Obama 'leans forward.' --LRP]

Tony Blair went to war without cabinet consent, senior mandarins say --In some of most damning evidence heard by the inquiry to date, the respected former mandarins rejected claims made by Mr Blair to the committee last week in which he insisted that cabinet ministers were kept informed of the progress to war. 25 Jan 2011 Tony Blair has been accused by two former heads of the civil service of taking the country to war in Iraq without the approval of his cabinet. Lord Wilson of Dinton and Lord Turnbull both rejected the former prime minister's claim that cabinet ministers "knew the score" and had been aware that he had agreed to invade Iraq soon after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Former Guantanamo detainee gets life sentence for single count of conspiracy 26 Jan 2011 A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced the first Guantanamo Bay detainee to be tried in a civilian court to life in prison for his role in the 1998 embassy bombings in Africa. The 36-year-old Ahmed Ghailani was convicted on Nov. 17 of a single count of conspiracy to destroy government buildings and property. Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of United States District Court delivered the maximum sentence: life with no parole. And he rejected the defense's request that Ghailani should have received a lesser sentence.

NBC: U.S. can't link accused Army private to Assange 24 Jan 2011 U.S. military officials tell NBC News that investigators have been unable to make any direct connection between a jailed army private suspected with leaking secret documents and Julian Assange, founder of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. The officials say that while investigators have determined that Manning had allegedly unlawfully downloaded tens of thousands of documents onto his own computer and passed them to an unauthorized person, [They did?] there is apparently no evidence he passed the files directly to Assange, or had any direct contact with the WikiLeaks figure.

'US drone downed in Afghanistan' 25 Jan 2011 An Afghan militant group has released footage of what it says is a downed US drone aircraft in the Logar province in eastern Afghanistan. The spokesman for the group also claimed that the men of the group had also downed three more US unmanned aircrafts in war-hit Afghanistan over the past month.

Turkey releases report on flotilla incident, accusing Israel --Turkey publicizes its internal report on the flotilla debacle in response to Israel's Turkel Commission investigation report on Sunday 25 Jan 2011 Antagonism between Turkey and Israel is being reinvigorated as each nation's report about the lethal storming by Israeli commandos of the Mavi Marmara ship last May is made public. Eight Turks and an U.S. citizen of Turkish descent were killed during the 4:26 a.m. raid on the humanitarian aid flotilla... The Turkish report found that Israeli units shot dead two people from their helicopters before fast-roping onto the deck, where they battled passengers armed with sticks, clubs, and knives mostly drawn from the ship's eight kitchens.

Iran not working on bomb: Israel intelligence head 25 Jan 2011 Iran is not currently working on producing a nuclear weapon but could make one within "a year or two" of taking such a decision, Israel's military intelligence chief said on Tuesday. "The question is not when Iran will acquire the bomb, but how long until the leader decides to begin enriching (uranium) at 90 percent," Brigadier General Aviv Kochavi told parliament's foreign affairs and defence committee in his first briefing since taking up the role in November.

According to reports, the warning even gave details of precisely where the bomb would be planted and yet the authorities failed to stop the attack at the country's busiest airport. The Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, today admitted there had been "clear security breaches" and blamed the management of Domodedovo airport.

Obama's Second State of the Union 26 Jan 2011 Following is the prepared text for President Obama's second State of the Union address on Tuesday, as released by the White House: Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans: Tonight I want to begin by congratulating the men and women of the 112th Congress, as well as your new Speaker, John Boehner. And as we mark this occasion, we are also mindful of the empty chair in this Chamber, and pray for the health of our colleague - and our friend - Gabby Giffords...

Obama's call for "our generation's Sputnik moment" [Yeah, more corporate giveaways and tax breaks for the rich.] 25 Jan 2011 In a House chamber draped with an air of bipartisan civility after the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, President Obama sought in his State of the Union address Tuesday night to recast the looming showdown with Republicans over deficits and spending as an issue of American competitiveness. "This is our generation's Sputnik moment," Obama said, referring to the former Soviet Union's launch of a space satellite in 1957 that served as a wake-up call to the United States, much as China's rise is seen as a threat to U.S. economic leadership now. [See: One Day After Securing Huge Deal With China, Boeing Lays Off 1000 US Workers 20 Jan 2011.]

US President Barack Obama, lawmakers mark Arizona shooting 26 Jan 2011 With black and white ribbons and a seat symbolically left empty, US President Barack Obama and sombre lawmakers paid tribute today to the victims of a January 8 deadly shooting rampage. Mr Obama, in making his annual State of the Union speech, was to pause to celebrate the victims and heroes of the assassination attempt on Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords. With the Democratic lawmaker working through a difficult recovery, the congressional delegation from her home state planned to sit together around an empty seat in the packed House of Representatives chamber.

His spending freeze proposal marks a modest extension of his earlier proposal to freeze spending for three years. He is expected to sidestep specifics, instead calling for members of both parties to work together to tackle the problem, according to congressional and administration officials.

SOTU or Hotch? --Facebook recap on Citizens For Legitimate Government Posted by Lori Price 25 Jan 2011
Chad Peterson: Shoveling out again (F$^%!) Then to mentally prepare for the SOTU address of brilliant rhetoric, deceit, lies, half-truths, and fraud masterfully delivered by the Corporatist-Republican Orator in Chief. Are you watching?
Lori Price Legitgov: No, 'Criminal Minds' is on. I'd rather watch fictional criminal minds than the real one.

The White House's corporate agenda By Tom Eley 25 Jan 2011 The White House has in recent days gone out of its way to make clear that tonight's State of the Union Address will outline an agenda tailored to the demands of the American financial aristocracy... It is a damning commentary on the reactionary consensus of US politics that nearly two-and-a-half years after Wall Street propelled America and the entire world into the deepest crisis since the Great Depression, a Democratic president flaunts his complete subordination to the banks and corporations.

Six chickens on a farm in Miyazaki City, the prefectural capital, were also found to have the virus on Saturday and 10,000 chickens were culled there.

E-mails Suggest Bear Stearns Cheated Clients Out of Billions 25 Jan 2011 Former Bear Stearns mortgage executives who now run mortgage divisions of Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and Ally Financial have been accused of cheating and defrauding investors through the mortgage securities they created and sold while at Bear. According to e-mails and internal audits, JPMorgan had known about this fraud since the spring of 2008, but hid it from the public eye through legal maneuvering. Last week a lawsuit filed in 2008 by mortgage insurer Ambac Assurance Corp against Bear Stearns and JPMorgan was unsealed. The lawsuit's supporting e-mails, going back as far as 2005, highlight Bear traders telling their superiors they were selling investors like Ambac a "sack of sh*t."

The Next Robo-Signing Crisis? By Diana Olick 25 Jan 2011 It's the next big shoe to drop in the robo-signing foreclosure scandal. Call it part two. We already know some banks halted foreclosure sales nationwide in October when it was discovered that servicers took short cuts, so-called "robo-signing" in the foreclosure sale process in judicial foreclosure states - about half the country. Now it appears they may have done the same thing in a different part of the process, the Notice of Default, which takes place in the other half - i.e. the non-judicial states - this happens before the foreclosure sale.

Bank Failures Rise to 7 24 Jan 2011 Last Friday, U.S. regulators shuttered four more banks in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Colorado, pushing up the failed U.S. banks figure to 7 so far in 2011. These were preceded by 157 bank failures in 2010, 140 in 2009 and 25 in 2008. While the bigger banks benefited greatly from the various programs launched by the government, many smaller banks continue to struggle.

The high court also ordered the city's election officials to include Emanuel's name as it starts to print ballots today.

The movement now has a Twitter and Facebook page. On the Facebook page, the people behind the effort say they are "just a bunch of fans who want to see Keith Olbermann run for Senate- this voice is too important to be silenced."

Polar bears likely to have tough year: expert --Scientist says thin ice this season could have long-term impact 24 Jan 2011 One of Canada's top polar bear scientists says the poor ice conditions in the eastern Arctic this year could have a devastating impact on the animals. Andrew Derocher, a professor at the University of Alberta, says the above-average temperatures in many places and the thin, late sea ice will keep polar bears from finding potential mates as well as seals. Just one year of bad ice can have a big impact on bears, especially nursing mothers and bears without much hunting experience, he said.

Blair should be forced to release secret Iraq files, says his former Cabinet Secretary 23 Jan 2011 Tony Blair should be forced to release secret documents that are believed to show he lied to Parliament over the Iraq War, a former Cabinet Secretary said last night. The respected mandarin, who served in the last Labour Government, said the ex-Prime Minister was wrong to refuse to release notes of discussions and private memos concerning his pledges to George Bush. Current Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell came under fire last week after announcing that Mr Blair would not be forced to publish the documents.
Domestic use of aerial drones by law enforcement likely to prompt privacy debate 23 Jan 2011 The drone technology that has revolutionized warfare in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan is entering U.S. national airspace. By 2013, the FAA expects to have formulated new rules that would allow police across the country to routinely fly lightweight, unarmed drones up to 400 feet above the ground - high enough for them to be largely invisible eyes in the sky. Such technology could allow police to record the activities of the public below with high-resolution, infrared and thermal-imaging cameras.
