25 Years of Struggle and Reconstruction in Narmada valley : 22 (Dhadgaon, Maharashtra) - 23 October (Badwani, Madhya Pradesh)

8th Biennial Convention of National Alliance of People's Movements :

October 24-26, Badwani, Madhya Pradesh

Dear Saathis,

We are thankful to many of you who have written back to us and are planning to join us for these two important occasions in our struggle. We hope you are also planning to come and be with us at this historic moment. The people's movement in Narmada has traversed a long journey over the past two and a half decades through various phases of struggle and dialogue, facing repression and undertaking legal action and also proposing and promoting reconstructive work. As a concerned supporter, you have been a close and continued witness to the many turns and twists in this peaceful struggle asserting by the nature-based communities, the right to life and livelihood as also the right to true and sustainable development, with dignity.

Through its persistent struggle from the streets to the Courts, people have exposed the fake claims of rehabilitation, with rampant corruption and utter non-compliance of environmental and other laws. As per officials estimates itself, the project costs have far outweighed the claimed benefits, with just 10% of the benefits attained and 10 times increase in costs, necessitating a serious and comprehensive review into the entire project and justifying Reports by Expert Committees that all project work must be halted, until full compliance is ensured. Close to three decades after it began, Sardar Sarovar today stands as financially unviable, environmentally destructive and socially damaging Project and has just remained a Monument of Mismanagement for Gujarat and the nation and a Monument of Injustice for the people of the valley, as is the case with many other Projects implemented across the country.

NAPM, since its emergence in early 90s continues to build an alliance for the larger struggles of the people and come up with national programmes to challenge the destructive development paradigm and evolve a comprehensive ideology. We do hope you all will be able to join our 8th Biennial Convention too on October 24-26th in Badwani. In case you have not received the invitation yet then please find it attached and also an update as mentioned below.

Brief Description of Events in Narmada valley:

Narmada Events: (22nd and 23rd Oct): The programmes in Narmada are to take place in Dhadgaon (Maharashtra) on the 22nd and in Badwani (Madhya Pradesh) on the 23rd amidst mass rallies and public meetings. A huge rally of thousands of adivasis would take place at Dhadgaon, led by B.D Sharmaji, Swami Agnivesh, Ramaswamy Iyer, Madhu Badhuri, Adv. Sanjay Parikh, Meher Engineer, Mansoor Khan, Ramdas Bhatkal, Sujato Bhadro, Roma, Dayamani Barla, Gautam Ghose, and many others, joined in by the adivasis of Maharashtra and adivasi leaders from various states, to be followed by a large Public Meeting.

We shall then go up to the river bank where a boat rally of not less than 20 boats shall pass through the river and you will be shown the submergence-affected adivasi villages like Anjanwara and Bhitada (M.P.) from the boat itself, by taking the boat to the river bank. 22nd night is a Kojagiri Poonam Divas (full moon night) and you will certainly find the visit memorable.

We will night-halt at one hilly adivasi village (Bhadal in M.P.) for a brief meeting and dinner, rest and start early next morning (23rd) to the river ghat Koteshwar by boat and reach the Nimad villages where there would be a welcome in many villages to be followed by a large rally and public gathering of thousands of people and felicitation of movements.

(Those who may not prefer boat travel may come upto Koteshwar by boat on the 22nd late night, and halt there and join the other groups on the 23rd morning).
