5Yrs Growth Contribution Gujarat Agri $1.2b, Ind $8b & Services $16b

5Yrs Growth Contribution Gujarat Agri $1.2b, Ind $8b & Services $16b

Today Modi questioned Gujarat HDR 2011 on the ground it was based on 2007-08 data but it was followed by three, average or below average rainfall years. His own 2011 presentation before Planning Commission for example admits there is marginal Agricultural growth in latest 5 years and in this major contribution was due to Bt Cotton. Figures would be negative or almost zero for agriculture at Constant Prices.

On page 20 Narendra Modi tells us 45% of Cropped Area in Gujarat that is largely irrigated is dedicated to Groundnut and Cotton – add Sugarcane mostly irrigated – over 50% of Cropped Area more than 50% of irrigated area is dedicated to non food crops or commercial crops. He also admits Gujarat is affected by draught.

In this exclusive presentation of Narendra Modi in last five years (2005-06 to 2010-11) GSDP of Gujarat expanded at current prices from Rs. 233,776 cr to Rs. 370,037 cr., this is Rs. 136,261 cr but in this contribution of Gujarat agriculture was just Rs.5,235 crores or Agriculture in Gujarat contributed just 4% State GDP Growth. Agricultural growth was stunted from Rs. 33,992 Cr to Rs. 39,277cr. In 5 years.

National Agricultural GDP for 2010-11 is Rs.1,341,503 crores and Gujarat contributed just Rs.39,277cr or barely 3% of India.

Even Rs.5235 cr growth in agriculture in five years is contributed by mainly Cotton production due to Bt Cotton.

Modi faults human index report, says '07 data used
Mahendra Kumar Singh TNN October24, 2011

New Delhi: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has questioned the findings of the human development report that portrayed his state as a poor performer on social indicators, saying it used 2007 data. Modi also questioned the timing of the report, which was released on Friday, a day before the National Development Council meeting.

"The report used 2007 data. Ask them why they chose this timing to release the report," Modi said. The report, which was prepared on the basis of government data of 2007-08, said Gujarat was the only developed state in the country where the percentage of malnourished children was higher than the national average. According to the report, the state had 44.6% underweight children, compared to the national average of 42%.

Modi, who takes great pride in Gujarat's economic growth, was not pleased at having his state mentioned in the same breath as laggards.

The report, prepared by the Institute of Applied Manpower Research of Planning Commission, also painted a grim picture of iron deficiency among women in the state. The percentage of women with severe anaemia is 2.6% in Gujarat — well above the national average of 1.8%. In Bengal and Bihar, just 1% of women suffer from the ailment.
