Yechury off to Beirut to attend world communist conference
New Delhi, Oct 21 (PTI) Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury would attend an important meet of communist and workers parties from across the world to finalise a plan of action for joint struggles against growing inequalities, poverty and imperialism.

Yechury left for Beirut today to attend the meeting of a working group of the International Communist and Workers'' Parties which would finalise the draft statement of the 13th international conference of communist and workers'' parties to be held in Athens in December.

The working group, of which Yechury is a member, would also finalise proposals to further strengthen solidarity and joint struggles throughout the world against growing income inequalities, poverty, hunger, exploitation and imperialism, CPI(M) sources said.

The upcoming Athens conference, to be held from December 9-11, assumes significance as Greece is witnessing a people''s movement against austerity measures introduced by the Social- Democrat government "at the behest of the IMF and European Union" to help tide over its debt crisis, they said.

Experiences from struggles taking place throughout the world, particularly in West Asia and North Africa, would also be exchanged at this conference preparations for which would be made at the Beirut meet, the sources said, adding the theme of the Athens conference would be ''Socialism is the future''.

The 11th such conference was organised jointly by CPI(M) and CPI in Delhi where a call for worldwide struggles by workers and peasants was given to protest the policies which led to the global economic crisis.
