UPSC 2014 result declared: 37 Muslims among 1236 successful candidates; 4 toppers are women

New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) declared the final result of the 2014 civil services examinations on Saturday afternoon. Of the total 1236 successful candidates who have made to the list, only 37 (2.99%) are Muslims.
This year interestingly four out five toppers are women. The toppers are Ira Singhal, Renu Raj and Nidhi Gupta, Vandana Rao and Suharsha Bhagat.
Last year, a total of 1122 candidates had made it to the prestigious civil services, of which only 34 were Muslims. The percentage of Muslims clearing the civil service examinations has hovered around 3% for last few years, although Muslims comprise about 13-14 % of the total population.

Muslims are dismally represented in the top government services, often due to lack of education and unavailability of resources. They are roughly 2% in the civil servants in the country.
The performance of successful Muslim candidates is almost same in numbers if compared with the results of last few years. In 2012 UPSC result, only 31 Muslims could make it to the final list out of total 998 successful candidates.
About 9.45 lakh candidates had applied for it but approximately 4.51 lakh appeared for the examination. Based on the results of the written part of Civil Services Examination, 2014 held by the UPSC in December, 2014 and the interviews for Personality Test held in April-June, 2015, the Commission prepares a merit list to recommend for appointments to: (i) Indian Administrative Service; (ii) Indian Foreign Service; (iii) Indian Police Service; and (iv) Central Services, Group 'A' and Group 'B'.
Of the 1236 candidates shortlisted this year, 590 (including 39 PH ) are from 'General' category, 354 (including 12 PH) are 'Other Backward castes (OBC)', 94 (including 2 PH) 'Scheduled Castes (SC)' and another 98 'Scheduled Tribe (ST)'.
