Investors' wealth swells over 10-fold in 10 years

MUMBAI: In an eventful decade, the wealth of investors in the Indian stock market has grown over 10-fold to nearly Rs 73 lakh crore by the end of 2010.

Besides, during the decade ended today, the total investor wealth, measured in terms of cumulative market capitalisation of all listed companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange , grew to nearly 10-fold from about Rs 7,00,000 crore at the end of the year 2000, to Rs 72,96,725.14 as on December 31, 2010.

Last 10 years have seen the stock markets bellwether Sensex travelling from 4,000 mark in 2001, to over 20,500 by the end of 2010.

"Sensex has grown over five-fold over the past decade. To put in other words, if somebody has invested Rs 1,00,000 in Sensex at the beginning of the decade, it would have, at present, become Rs 5,16,792," SMC Capitals equity head Jagannadham Thunuguntla said.

Stock markets have witnessed a smart surge over the decade on the back of robust overseas investments and strong India growth story, said an expert.

"The barometer of Indian capital markets Sensex has moved up five fold from 4,000 to 20,000 in this decade and the FII investment, which was Rs 6,200 crores in the year 2000 has surpassed Rs 1,00,000 crore in 2010," Unicon Securities Vice President Research Madhumita Ghosh said.

Going forward, experts feel that with the growing stature of India on the global front, the coming decade will also be equally fruitful for India.

Stay up to date on these results:

Friends, I was offline for last week as I was busy in 27th Mulnivais Bamcef National Conference in Durgapur.

Last year, we could not get a Venue in Bengal and the Venue was shifted to Jaipur in Rajasthan where no less than EIGHTY Four Thousand Delegates joined the convention last year.

We tried our best to get a place in Kolkata or adjoined to Kolkata, but failed. Finally, we managed to get Chitralaya Ground, HARICHAND GURUCHAND NAGAR  in Durgapur which was not controlled by the Marxists Government.

Since Bamcef started, it is the First ever National Convention in Bengal which crossed the Jaipur record on the first day.

One Lac Eight Thousand delegates joined this year and Bengal  delegates were no less than Five thousand.

Disturbances in railway schedule in Rajsthan due to Gurjjar Movement and Terror struck South Eastern Railway had been great hinderance. But this time, delegates form South India, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujrat, Chhattishgargh and MP overwhelmed all expectations.

The Ruling Brahaminical Hegemony arranged a Baba Ramdev Yoga Tour since 20th to 28th December in Bengal and hijacked the Anti Brahaminical Matua Movement, but Bengali delegates recorded Highest Number! The Brahaminical Toilet Media has Branded Harichand Thakur who led the Indigenous aboriginal Peasantry comprising of SC, ST,BC, OBC and Minority  communities in Indigo Revolt and Rejected Brahaminical Religion and Ritual establishing Matua Religion, as Brahaminical and Matua as Religious Sect! What a Manipulation of History as Harichand Thakur led the Great Chandal Movement to ABOLISH Untouchability and Annihilition of Caste was his Fundamental Objective even before Phule, Ambedkar and Narayan Guru.

As Pune Peetpawan Brahamins made Dada Kondu Ramdas the Biological father of Chhatrapati Shivaji defaming JIJAU Mata, the Bengali Kayastha Brahamins do try to Bastardise the Aboriginal Legacy of Matua Chandal Indigo Pesantry Insurrections! They are habitual to do this as they did it with Lingayat, Sant, Baul, Sufi movements and killed Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism Brahaminising them. In Maharashtra, the Aboriginal Indigenous Masses Revolted to defend their Icon Chhatrapati Shivaji, but the Bengali Aboriginal Humanscape is totally Hinduised, brainwashed, enslaved and Bonded and they do glorify Brahaminical Bastardised Identity being Uprooted and Degenrated. So, our people are suicidal and Indulged in Bloodshed to defend the Brahaminical Hegemony. They Clashed today in Thakurnagar, at matua headquarter divided in MARXIST and TMC Factions! What a SHAME! No Newspaper, media or political party have come ahead to press the Matua demands to grant Citizenship to all Refugees. Nothing is written on either Citizenship amendment act or UID, Deportation drive or Ethnic cleansing. The Focus is on Change to sustain the Manusmriti rule as ETERNAL!

The Matuas - a subaltern religious sect, comprising mainly lower caste, poor Hindu refugees from East Pakistan/Bangladesh - achieved the near impossible by getting top CPM and Trinamool Congress leaders on the same stage at Esplanade on Tuesday, along with those of the Congress, the BJP and the Forward Bloc.

It's proof that the Matuas are a force no party in Bengal can ignore. The community, a 5-lakh-strong vote base, first made its presence felt in the Bongaon assembly bypolls in 2006 when it rose against the CPM and handed the ruling party a crushing defeat.

This is why CPM leaders Gautam Deb and Kanti Biswas could not refuse the Matua Mahasangh invite for a mega rally in the city to place their chief demand - citizenship rights to Bangladeshi refugees who moved to India after 1971. There were no slogans or political banners. The Matuas announced their might with conch shells and drums and "horibol" on their lips.

While the mega rally choked the heart of the city, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee entertained a Matua delegation at Writers' and assured he would take up their demands with the Centre.

On the dais, Pradesh Congress chief Manas Bhuniya promised to speak to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, PM Manmohan Singh and home minister P Chidambaram by the second week of January.

Former BJP state chief Tathagata Roy repeatedly pointed out his party had all along been sympathetic to Hindu refugees fleeing Bangladesh even after May 25, 1971. Trinamool MP Mukul Roy, the Union MoS for shipping, also showed along with party MP Gobinda Naskar and MLA Jyotipriya Mullick (both representatives of Matua-dominated areas).

Roy and Deb shared the dais for a few minutes before the Trinamool leader got a call on his mobile and climbed down. He spent the rest of the afternoon at a nearby tea stall.

Deb congratulated the Matua organizers for being able to rally all mainstream parties. "It makes me happy to see Congress, CPM, Trinamool and BJP leaders on stage. You have a valid point. Let all MPs from Bengal set aside their political differences and take up with Delhi the plight of the refugees.

When it comes to the interest of state, we should not stick to narrow politics. My department did not hesitate to hand over 72 acres of land in Haldia to Kolkata Port Trust although Trinamool's Mukul Roy is the minister of state for shipping," the Bengal housing minister said.

A crore votes at stake, Trinamool, CPI-M, Congress, BJP share dais

KolkKolkata, Dec 28 (IANS) The compulsions of vote bank politics presented a rare sight here Tuesday when leaders of West Bengal's arch-rivals Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Trinamool Congress, as also of the Congress and the BJP, shared the dais at a rally organised by a group of Scheduled Castes organised by a group of Scheduled Castes

This, when the main opposition Trinamool has been boycotting, since last year's Lok Sabha polls, government functions where CPI-M ministers and leaders were in attendance.
The union ministers from Trinamool had even in the past left the venue of government functions midway to avoid been seen with CPI-M functionaries.
However, with the All India Matua Mahasangha group, said to wield influence over more than one crore voters mostly in the state's southern districts, political parties made a beeline for the rally in the heart of Kolkata.
Among those at the rally were state Housing Minister and CPI-M state secretariat member Gautam Deb and Trinamool top gun and union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy - the latter having come with two other party leaders - besides state Congress chief Manas Bhunia and BJP's Tathagata Roy, apart from leaders of other partners of the ruling Left Front.
'This is historic. It is great that Trinamool leaders are also here, besides leaders of other parties,' said Deb in his address.
'It is a difficult task to bring all political parties in our state together for a cause, but the Matua Mahasangha has successfully done this,' said Deb expressing his thanks to Barama - Binapani Debi, who heads the group of SCs and OBCs comprising mostly immigrants from Bangaldesh.
Deb also urged all political parties, mainly the Trinamool leaders, to keep aside the political differences and come together to launch the movement on development issues and noble causes.
'All the 42 Lok Sabha members from West Bengal and the MPs in Rajya Sabha irrespective of their political affiliations should come together and place the demands of the Matua Mahasangha in parliament,' said Deb.
Roy and other Trinamool leaders sat on the dais but did not speak. Echoing Deb, Bhunia said his party will support whole heartedly if all the parties come together on the issues raised by the Matua Mahasangha.
'A Congress delegation, including me, will place the demands of the Matua before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in January,' said Bhunia.
The Matua Sangha, founded by Binapani Devi's husband's great grandfather Harichand Thakur, a Brahmin, at Gopalganj in Faridpur (now in Bangladesh), held the rally demanding changes in the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2003 to give citizenship, voting rights and proper rehabilitation to refuges staying in India over decades.
A team of delegates of the Matua Mahasangha also submitted a deputation before Governor M. K. Naranayan and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Sensex enters New Year on optimistic note; gains over 3,000 points in 2010

MUMBAI: India's robust economic growth and record overseas investments helped the stock market add about Rs 12 trillion to investor wealth, as the BSE benchmark Sensex gained over 3,000 points during 2010. It gained 17 percent in 2010, to be among the best-performing major Asian markets this year.

As the stock market closed on a bullish note on the last day 2010, with a 120.02 point surge in Sensex today, the benchmark index rose by 3044.28 points for the entire year.

In the process, the total investor wealth, measured in terms of cumulative market capitalisation of all listed companies, rose to Rs 72,96,725.14 crore, from Rs 60,79,000 crore at the end of 2009. During the period, the Sensex rose from 17,464.81 points on December 31, 2009 to 20,509.09 points today.

Besides, during the decade ended today, the total investor wealth grew over 10-fold from about Rs 7,00,000 crore at the end of the year 2000. The Sensex registered nearly five-fold rise over the 10-year period.

"The barometer of Indian capital markets Sensex has moved up five fold from 4,000 to 20,000 in this decade and the FII investment, which was Rs 6,200 crores in the year 2,000, has surpassed Rs 1,00,000 crore in 2010," Unicon Securities Vice President Research Madhumita Ghosh said.

Market experts said the key driving forces behind the market rally this year, when the stocks rose by an average of over 17 per cent, were impressive FII inflows as also the continuing robustness of domestic economy, which inched closer to the 9 per cent annual growth level.

"In 2009-10, in lieu of the global meltdown Indian market showed better resilience due to stricter banking norms and robust domestic demand. We showed faster recovery and reverted to to GDP growth of closer to 9 per cent in FY10," Globe Capital PMS Head KK Mittal said.

The year also saw the Sensex hitting its record closing level of 21004.96 points on Diwali day, November 5. However, the record-breaking bull run continued only till Diwali, and consolidation, marked with bouts of sluggishness, was seen on the bourses in the last two months of 2010.

      Scrap coal nationalisation

It is unfortunate that the environment and coal ministries are at loggerheads over the so-called 'no-go' areas for mining. The coal ministry has reportedly sought the Union Cabinet's nod for 203 coal blocks that are being denied mining permission, because they fall in the no-go areas.

The way to resolve the issue is to keep the big picture in mind, and to proceed with pragmatism, taking note of the ground realities. Coal-bearing areas amount to only about 0.54% of the total land mass. Further, forest cover on coal-rich land adds up to just 0.16% of India .s landmass.

The minuscule forest cover involved need not mean that the environmental consequences can be dismissed out of hand. The coal-rich forest areas may be ecologically fragile regions or involve core areas of biodiversity.

But the point to note is that much of our coal, which provides for over half our commercial energy needs and accounts for 70% of power generation, is sourced from a regionally concentrated zone in south-central India. Estimates also suggest that the identified 203 blocks can double the total installed thermal power capacity. But we do need to differentiate between mere possibility and practicality.

It may well be that many of the blocks are simply too remote and inaccessible to provide coal-linkage at reasonable cost. In many cases, it would be far more cost-effective to import, say, Australian coal and reap the benefits of high mining yields abroad (and access better coal grades as well).

Also, it is possible that some of the coal-bearing forested areas are amenable to environmentally-sustainable mining practices. This would require compensatory afforestation so that the overall forest cover of the coal-belt is not reduced.

But more important is the need for proactive policy for inclusive development in the mineral and coal rich areas, which paradoxically also have the highest poverty ratios and are industrially, economically and socially backward.

Additionally, instead of encouraging sprinkling of capacity, we need to step up productivity in domestic mining with reforms and do away with a panoply of existing rigidities. The continuing policy of coal nationalisation is a glaring anachronism indeed.

      The EPFO mess

The Employees Provident Fund Organisation's ( EPFO ) move to ask the government to bar workers from withdrawing their PF balances on switching jobs is a frantic but incremental step to salvage the employees' provident fund scheme.

Sure, the proposal — based on an internal study which showed that only 0.8% of workers opted to transfer their PF account to their new job — will help workers build a retirement corpus. However, the suggestion has come too late. The EPFO is in a mess. The management of the EPF is opaque and the guaranteed return is sub-optimal .

Its accounting systems are archaic , hindering seamless portability. A new rule to bolster the retirement corpus of workers is no guarantee that the EPFO will manage its funds efficiently. Workers need professional asset managers to better manage their retirement savings.

This is available in the form of the New Pension System (NPS) that manages pension funds of civil servants who joined service in 2004 or thereafter, and, later, of voluntary individual members. The NPS offers seamless portability and also has restrictions on withdrawals. The government should amend the EPF Act, allow workers to exit the EPFO and take their provident fund account to the NPS along with the employers' contribution.

Unlike the EPFO, the NPS is a well-designed scheme. Individuals can choose their fund manager and the risk profile of the allocation of their savings to different investments .

Their contributions and returns are deposited in a pension account that does not allow any withdrawals . At retirement, the individual has to invest at least 40% of the pension wealth to buy an annuity that provides a monthly income for life. However, in addition to the pension account, an individual can have a voluntary tier-II account.

Withdrawals from this account are possible at any time. The two-tier structure gives more flexibility. The returns from NPS, which charges the lowest fund management and record keeping fees globally , are superior. More efforts to revamp the EPF will be futile. Instead, the NPS should be marketed better, with more incentives for its distributors.

Ratan Tata dreams of cars running on water: Scientist

BANGALORE: Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata's dream is to see cars run on water and he has invested USD 15 million in a start-up firm supporting research in the field, an eminent scientist said today.

Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister Prof C N R Rao said one of his close friends and a professor in the famed Massechusetts Institute of Technology in the US has found a way to split water directly into hydrogen and oxygen.

" Ratan Tata has given him (the Professor) 15 million (US) dollars so that he (Tata) can own that company when it comes up," Prof Rao said.

"He (Tata) wants to invest in a company which will split water directly into hydrogen and oxygen," Rao said, adding, when any kind of water -- toilet water, rain water or sea water -- can split to hydrogen and oxygen, then these components can be used for energy.

"And a dream of Ratan Tata is eventually cars will be run on water. My dream is also that," he said, referring to a recent conversation he had with the Tata Group Chairman.

Rao spoke on this initiative during a press conference convened by the Chemical Research Society of India to give details of the organisation's planned activities in 2011, an year which had been declared as the "International Year of Chemistry" by the United Nations.
