SAHAI CALLS FOR MORE INVESTMENT IN FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY

Kolkata, August 27, 2010

The Minister for Food Processing, Shri Subodh Kant Sahai has called upon industrialists to invest more and more in food processing industries. He assured them that this is one industry where the industrialists will never lose money. He was addressing at a meeting on 'Scope of Food Processing Industries: Focus West Bengal' organized by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Kolkata today.

The minister underlined that the food processing industry is the only sector to have shown 15% growth even during recession and stressed that this sector provides maximum job opportunities for the youths.

The minister has urged industrialists to go for 'contract farming'. He pointed out that repeated requests were made on behalf of the ministry to the state government to encourage 'contract farming', but in vain. On the other hand, he said, the southern states have created an euphoria on 'contract farming'.

Shri Sahai said that food processing is still not a very popular sector in India. At present in India, the minister pointed out, only 2.5% of fruits and vegetables are processed and 10% of all food commodities are processed. He rued that barring shrimp culture, potential of more than 8500km long Indian coast is still unexplored.
